Do you remember the days when a simple box held such wonder? Such endless possibilities? Eric and I were cleaning out the garage recently when we came across the box that our nursery glider came in. Why we held onto it for so long, I don't know. Maybe it is because it seems so unnecessary to throw away a perfectly good box. And this box is a beauty. It would make an ideal fort for a kid. If you cut a big square in the center you could host your own television newscast. With an oar it would make a dandy land boat. Spaceship for two...definitely.
We thought about offering it to one of our neighbors with two young sons. Then it dawned on us. With today's generation, maybe sometimes a box is...just a box. When we were young a good box would provide hours of entertainment. And with babies we know that the box that a gift comes in holds just as much pleasure as the gift itself. So how is it that somewhere along the line we grew tired of boxes as entertainment?
If we were to offer said box to said neighbor, would she and her sons look at us like we were crazy? Would it be the equivalent of, "Would you be interested in having this gum I found on the bottom of my shoe?" These days, kids are so much more focused on the entertainment on the idiot box than with an actual box. Don't get me wrong, I love me some TV, but I spent much of my youth enjoying some fresh air in addition to watching television. In this time of video games and in-your-face entertainment do our children get to exercise their imagination the way we did as kids?
So I guess what I am saying is, we have a free box to a good home.

You might want to hang on to that box...in about 6 months it's going to be a wonderful toy for Liam. You'd be surprised at how much joy kids will find in non-toys =)
