We met with the Pediatric GI on Monday who believes that Liam has a severe milk protein allergy. This allergy is likely causing his acid reflux and creating pain when he eats, which explains the bad reaction he had to the milk-based formula. Instead of trying him on a soy formula (the soy protein is very similar to the milk protein), the doctor put him on an amino acid based formula. So far he seems to be doing pretty well on it.
He also had his barium swallow test on Wednesday. It was difficult because he had to fast for three hours beforehand. This was a challenge since Liam eats every 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I learned that babies do not do well with the whole concept of "fasting." To make matters worse, the doctor hadn't shown up for his appointment, so another doctor stepped in 45 minutes after his scheduled appointment. Fortunately, he did very well. They believe his few brief episodes of aspirating were nothing to be concerned with. They also showed us a few techniques for supporting Liam's jaw while he eats so that he does not become too fatigued.
Thank you to all of our family and friends who have been praying for Liam. Eric and I can defintely sleep better at night knowing that he will eventually grow out of this condition.
In other news, a few nights ago my jaw started hurting and it didn't take me long to realize that I had a wisdom tooth coming in (when it rains it pours). I must be some kind of freak, or possibly very evolved, because I only ever had one wisdom tooth that developed. I was told that it would probably never come in. Until now. Wish me luck as I have it extracted tomorrow. Let's hope those final pregnancy pounds disappear with my liquid diet!
I recently heard Beth Moore say that God gives us grace for the "what is" more than the "what if." I especially feel that right now.
